Punschkrapfen……Anyone?

So to explain what a ‘Punschkrapfen’ is, think of a French fancy. For those of you unaware of the glories of the French fancy they are small square sponge pastries with a dollop of vanilla icing on top, then completely covered in either chocolate, lemon or strawberry icing. These things are lovely.

So anywho, now you have the mental picture, think of the pink one on its own. Now make it a little bigger. Now make it reak of alcohol. Now you’re getting closer to a Punschkrapfen. It’s a high calory(328 for a small one) Austrian speciality.

It’s the evil French Fancy since it is a rum cake and it is wonderful, but very rich and really all I can manage is the one on its own, which is good news for my heart! So we bought a pack of four and I only ate two while we were there, so I brought two home in my carry-on, along with a Sacher Torte and a few bars of Milka chocolate for my friends.

A Sacher Torte is another Austrian speciality pastry. It’s a fancy chocolate cake with apricot jam through it so it’s got a tang. I kept hearing from Roll and Erica that it’s so rich and smells so chocolatey its sickening(Roll refuses to be in the same room as an open one) and that the best place to get them is the Hotel Sacher where they were invented in the 1800s. So halfway through our stay we went there and a slice cost me €4.90! Ok, you’d play this for a slice of cake in most places in Ireland anyway I guess….Anywho, it didnt have the smell and it was a bit dry for my liking, and to be honest, it wasnt great. It looked pretty, but that doesn’t really make up for it. Before we left I found a cheap one in spar, a fiver for a whole cake, so I brought it back in my handluggage and to be honest it better meets my expectations, even though it is horrenously sweet. So, I’m not sure if I already wrote this since I saved what I’ve written to this point yesterday….anywho….myself, my friend Roll, her sister and her sister’s friend (Ex-bf) rented an apartment on Glockengasse in Vienna. The apartment had an odd layout of as soon as you went in the front door there was a door to your right which I guess used to be a closet, but it was the toilet. Solely the toilet. No sink. On the left was the wall of the sink and glass bricks letting light into the kitchen. Ahead were two tables and four chairs for breakfast in the kitchen by the windows. Off this was the room with bunkbeds myself and roll shared. Then there was the sitting room, with bigass couch, bar and dinning table….plus alll german tv.

Back to the kitchen. Normal kitchen stuff. Sink, giant fridge, gas stove/oven, many many cupboards. Then swing doors like in a Saloon….These led into the bathroom…..yeah swingdoors in a bathroom…odd…so you can sorta see into the kitchen from the big multiple person bath and the shower over in the corner. Out of the other door from the bathroom, a door with frosted glass panels was the master bedroom. There was a window in the bathroom opposite this door opening into the hallway outside our apartment, the window was frosted glass too and there were bars infront of it to stop anyone using it to get into the apartment….but still odd……

We stayed for six days and in this time, went to the Succession building to see Klimt’s mural, the natural history museum, the national museum, the palace, the zoo, the aqua-terra zoo, the hotel sacher, huntwasser haus, Stephansplaz, the cocktail bar around the corner from us (x3)….and probably other stuff i can’t remember right now…along with general exploring of the city centre.
None of us had German, probably much to the annoyance of the locals…Will write more later. …..Have some photos….

um…..i was typing….and then i pushed a button….and now everything i wrote is gone…

Ok so 10 of us went up to Dundalk(or Fun-dalk as we now call it) for the BICS awards, the Board of Irish College Soceities and we cleaned up at the awards. Our college is considered a small college so we were in the small college categories, and won Best Fresher, Best Society and Best Society Person. Go on Maynooth!!! Pictures will be put up soon.

Pretty much drank too much, though I remained fairly sober up until I got my award, ‘cos I didn’t want to risk making a speech while drunk….. spent the end of the night throwing up in the bathroom sink in our hotel room. Feeling a little tender today as a result, but diligently went to my two hour ethics lecture this morning when we got back. SO TIRED.

Oh movie for you Ger, Run Fatboy Run. It’s got simon pegg and dylan moran in it. Good giggle.

Pretty much in closing, I will repeat my acceptance speech.
” I want to say thank you to Amnesty and the Fencing Club for giving me this opportunity. Free Tibet! So long and thanks for all the fish.”

Another day in NUI Maynooth

So anywho, the sky is scattered with some pretty threatening clouds even though there are some patches of a reassuring blue peeping through in spots. I’m currently taking refudge in the Callen builidng having found a free computer and wanting to waste an hour without studying again or drinking coffee.
I should’ve taken a wander over to Easons and checked if their Ticketmaster machine is working again so I can buy my IAMX ticket, but since I left the study room in the Arts building I’ve been getting this sore twinge in the socket of my hip where it joins with my left leg. Probably not a good thing.
Did you know today is pancake tuesday? I sure as hell didn’t until yesterday when one of my friends exclaimed in Dunnes that he had to buy pancake mix, but would leave it for today so he could spend his money on alcohol.
Today I got three assignments back, two Spanish and one psychology. All three are Bs, so not too bad. Thought I’d been doing pretty piss poor grade wise on them, but turns out I was wrong. All I need now is to get a B on my psych exam and I’ll be flying! I’m pretty sure I did fine on my last lab write up. The one before that was my first one, so I wasn’t too sure what to put in it, but it got a B-, so here’s hoping the latest one brings back an equal if not better grade. Fingers crossed.
I’m starting to get hungry again, so I might go raid one of the vending machines in the Arts building now since I don’t have the time nor desire to go to the canteen, AKA the ‘University Restaurant”.
Ta ta for now, the grindstone and my stomach are calling.

Fencing and old friends

Well, lectures begin again tomorow, a day which also brings with it the resumption of Amnesty’s meetings, training for fencing, an essay deadline and two audits.

I finished Amnesty’s audit today and submitted a little while ago, so it should be on Ian’s computer tomorow when he’ll inspect our financial activities. But, before that I’ll get to sit in on the fencing audit since the president is required to attend, so I might aswell to get some insight as to what to expect for Amnesty’s one.
My essay that’s due in tomorow, still isn’t finished yet,and I’m starting to have some major doubts about how I did the things I’m writing about. Ah well, it shall be finished and handed in on time if it costs me a night’s sleep.

Yesterday was the Trinity Cup, so that meant a painfully early morning to catch the train to town to go play stabby-stabby with some other clubs. We managed to scrape together a short notice team even though most of the few females we have in the club weren’t availible to go, and we needed two girls on the team, damn Italian Relay being so odd. It turned out to be a pretty good competition. I spent the first part of the morning shitting a brick over the ass-kicking I knew I’d get in my matches…But after awhile I managed to calm down with the help of my team mates, and the supporters from our club who didnt get on the team. Out of my 6 matches, I won 2, which I think is pretty good considering I’ve only been training in epee since December and had no training in January save for an emergency session during the week for this competition. I’m feeling a little more confident about the Cork competition now, though trying to get some of the basics down for saber in three weeks is going to be really difficult.
Kyle got some video footage on my camera of some of the matches yesterday so I’m loading them onto youtube so I can put them on the club’s Bebo page. It’s painful watching my ones because epee is just so damn slow. ah well, saber makes up for it. None of shane’s matches yesterday got timed because that’s how fast it is. Epee and foil are three minutes each, but I think Shane’s matches lasted on average a minute and a half. Eeeeeeep.
Ah well, I can only do my best. I’ll have the first day of the Cork comp to practice and wander around Cork city, since none of my matches will be til the Sunday, so I won’t have too many bruises clashing with my fancy new dress. 🙂
Turns out an old friend that I haven’t talked to in years was at the competition too. He’s on the Trinity team, so he turned up to cheer them on towards the end and help with the tidying up. We had a fun chat about stuff in general and a little remanissing about the past. Made for an interesting way to end the competition.

Life’s not going half bad right now. 🙂
